While the mask and breathing apparatus may seem like the logical first purchases for a beginning diver, some experts suggest purchasing a wetsuit before buying anything else. The first reason has to do with hygiene. Many people will use a rental wetsuit over the course of its lifetime. While shops do use cleaning products to sanitize the suits after use, some divers feel more comfortable wearing a suit that has not been worn by other people.
The other primary reason a suit should be at the top of the purchase list is the importance of the fit. Since the wet suit’s major function is retaining body heat, a suit that doesn’t fit properly will not hold the body's heat well. Buying a suit that is a precise fit for one’s body type ensures maximum heat preservation.
